Description

Spend the afternoon of Friday 29 June discovering all you need to know about adapting literature for the screen with our expert speakers including screenwriters, producers, literary agents and business affairs experts.

Page to Screen: Demystifying the Process of Optioning and Developing a Literary Work for the Screen

15:00 - 16:30
TRAVERSE THEATRE 1
EIFF Press & Industry Centre

In the first of a series of Page to Screen activities designed to bring publishers and producers together, this informative and interactive session will offer attendees a broader understanding of the landscape from the perspective of writers and producers and discuss how content moves between print and screen media.

This session will explore the nuts and bolts of optioning a literary work to adapt for film. Panellists will cover research and development, pitching yourself as a writer or producer, negotiating the deal, copyright adaptation agreements, option periods and extensions, as well as ancillary rights, net profit shares and general rules of thumb for successful options. If you’ve written a book or discovered a book and want to find out your next steps, this session is for you.

Panellists for this session will include Canongate Books publishing director Francis Bickmore, business affairs consultant Katharine Otway and producer Paul Welsh of Digicult/ Edge City Films.

Page to Screen: The Writer’s Point of View
17:00 - 18:30
TRAVERSE THEATRE 1
EIFF Press & Industry Centre

Creative interpretations of literary works are often credited to the director, but what about the writers involved in the process? How does it feel to see your story morph from page to screen? How easy is it to shape someone else's ideas into another format? Join our panel of screenwriters and novelists as they recount their unique experiences of writing, selling and adapting for the screen.

Screenwriters in attendance will include Olivia Hetreed (Girl with a Pearl Earring, Wuthering Heights), Stephan Elliott (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Flammable Children), Paul Laverty (I, Daniel Blake, The Angels' Share, My Name is Joe) and Andrea Gibb (Dear Frankie, Swallows and Amazons).

These events are delivered in association with Jessica Fox who is the creator of the Page to Screen programme of activities that will take place across Scotland throughout the year.

YOU DON'T NEED TO BE AN EIFF PASSHOLDER TO ATTEND THE PAGE TO SCREEN EVENTS ON FRIDAY 29 JUNE.
