~ coaching individuals suffering complex and chronic pain to achieve success: Pain Coach in Sport
What is Pain Coaching?
There is no single clinician or therapist who forms the ideal practitioner for chronic and complex pain. Such pain is the number one global health burden and reaches across society, gender and age, hence the absolute need to create such individuals. The Pain Coach meets that vital need as we face and address the vast problem of pain.
Pain Coaching is a blend of strengths based coaching with the latest understanding of the science pain. From this emerges an approach that addresses the person as much as the condition, considering the multitude of influences upon pain together with the known biological mechanisms.
The Pain Coach gives suffering individuals the skills, knowledge and treatment to overcome their pain. As coaches we deliver the tools but also the ‘know how’ so that individuals can truly engage with the programme. In effect, the person becomes their own coach so that they can make empowered decisions moment by moment. This independence is fostered and grows as new and healthy experiences are actively chosen and generated.
The focus of the programme is upon the person living well by developing healthy habits of thought and action that result in sustained wellbeing. In doing so, the protect and survive states that predominate in chronic pain are normalised and the sensitivity and pain change. In sport, this is all about performance at the level of that individual, working with all members of the training team.
The Pain Coach sees the potential in each individual. The coach knows that they have the ability to overcome the challenge by changing their relationship with the pain, and repeatedly choosing positive actions in line with their desired outcome. This is positive encouragement based upon the science of pain.
