Le Pub Scientifique. Pain, Possibilities & Potential - Exploring Plasticity (3)

Mindfulness - A counter intuitive approach to pain

Mindfulness can be described as the attentional skills of concentration, clarity and acceptance working together. Paying attention in this way allows us to untangle the strands of our experience, reducing the tendency we have to amplify and consolidate things. With pain this can bring relief from the way that sensory, cognitive and emotional aspects of pain build up and reinforce one another.

Given our instincts to withdraw from uncomfortable experiences, how can we learn to accept pain? What does that even mean? This practical session will examine acceptance in the context of pain, exploring common misunderstandings and examining how we can develop acceptance as a skill.

This is the third and final installment exploring plasticity at Le Pub Scientifique.
