About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

A beginners at portraits workshop, we will look at some famous portraits through the ages, so you can see you don't need to paint a photograph! We will think about the power of colours to communicate and perhaps pattern, contrast, block colour and line, texture and other techniques to communicate the character of the person we are painting.

You can use watercolours acrylics coloured pencils or pastels but the class won't be about learning techniques for using the materials. So it's a good idea to use materials you'be used before! (We have pastels and some opporutnities to use other materials at prebvious workshops over the summer, or contact me to arrange a workshop for perhaps a couple of you to get the basics)

Bring a small (handbag makeup type) mirror if you want to do a self portrait, as well as some photos, and pring photos or copies of photos of other people you'd like to draw. And it's a good idea to wear an apron, and don't wear your very best clothes. If you're doing a self portrait perhaps bring a favourite scarf or some fun jewellery or a hat you can use as part of the portrait!

We'll do some warm up excercises, which you make decide will be part of or inspire the portrait itself and then you'll work on acrylic paper or watercolour or mixed media paper to create a fabulous picture!

If you have your own materials you want to use you're welcome to bring them but let me know by Friday before the session, so I can provide the rest of what you need.

Any questions please ask!

This workshop is suitable for age 14+ if studying and interested in art (perhaps taking GCSE) and adults

Tea and coffee provided.

I can't wait to see what you produce!
