Do I need to be artistic to take part?

Accepted Answer

No, you don't need to be artistic, but you will need to be able to hold a paint brush with enough control to make marks on the plate.

Question 2

Will you tell me what to do?

Accepted Answer

We won't tell you what subject matter to paint, as we hope you will have brought your ideas with you, either sketched on a piece of paper, or in your head.  We will help in every way we can to tell you how to transfer  the idea you have into your finished painting.

Question 3

Are the colours of the paints the same as the colour they will be on the finished plate?

Accepted Answer

No, they're not!  The paints that we use are special glazes which are often completely different after the plate is fired.  You will just have to trust us when we tell you how it will change.

Question 4

How long will it take to finish my painting?

Accepted Answer

We have allowed 30 minutes, which from experience, we know is plenty time.  It does mean that you will need to have a good idea of what you want to do before you arrive, then all your time will go towards creating your vision!  Come along with a sketch on paper, or an idea in your head.

Question 5

Can I take my plate home when I've finished painting it?

Accepted Answer

No, you won't be able to take it away that day, as it will need to go into our kiln to be fired.  That is when it will become colourful, shiny, and strong!  You will be able to collect it at a later date, or we can arrange to post it to you.

Question 6

Do I need to wear special clothing?

Accepted Answer

You don't need to wear anything special, but don't wear your best clothes.  We will provide aprons on the day.

Question 7

I use a wheelchair.  Will I be able to take part?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you will!  Our building is wheelchair accessible, and the painting space is wheelchair friendly.  We only have standard sized toilet facilities, however, so that may be something you need to consider.  Please get in touch if you would like to clarify anything else.

Question 8

Can I paint my plate with my friends or family?

Accepted Answer

Yes, of course!  There are 8 places at each sitting, so room for several friends and family to take part at the same time.  Children under 14 must have an appropriate adult with them, though, even if that adult isn't taking part in the event.

Question 9

Do you offer a reduced price for groups or families?

Accepted Answer

No, unfortunately not.  The price for each participant is set at what we consider to be a very reasonable level and we hope that you will be pleased to know that 100% of this fee will be donated to the registered charity, Highland Hospice in Inverness.

Question 10

What if I need to go to the toilet?

Accepted Answer

We don't have public toilet facilities, but we do have standard ladies and gents staff toilets in the building, which you will be welcome to use.

Question 11

Do I get a refund if my plate breaks in the kiln?

Accepted Answer

No, I'm afraid not.  We can't offer a refund as all the payments will be going directly to the Highland Hospice registered charity.  In the very unlikely event of a plate breaking in the kiln, we can arrange an alternative date for you to repeat the plate painting experience.

Question 12

What if the time slots have all sold out?

Accepted Answer

Don't worry.  We hope to have more times slots available on the afternoons of the same dates.  These will be available to book on site at the Lochinver pottery.

Question 13

Will the Highland Hospice charity get all the money I pay when I book?

Accepted Answer

Eventbrite will send us all the money that they have received from bookings, less a small processing fee which they will keep.  We will then pass on all of the funds we receive to the Highland Hospice.

Question 14

Do children need to be accompanied by an adult while painting their plates?

Accepted Answer

Children up to the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult, even if that adult isn't taking part in the activity.

Question 15

What if I think my under 7 year old child is very capable of painting a plate?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, we can't allow children under 7 to take part in the ceramic plate painting.  However, there will be a free age-appropriate arty activity  available nearby.  It is important that carers remain with under 7s at all times.
