Painting for Pleasure Day 1. Saturday 24th June,10am – 4.30pm.

Tutored - Full Price: £14

The new Painting for Pleasure weekend art course is tutored by local Granton Artist Gareth Hutchison. You can choose to attend both days or one of either weekend days.

An enjoyable and inspirational painting class designed to help beginners & enthusiasts to get started with painting, whilst also supporting more advanced painters to develop their skills and techniques. No previous experience necessary.

The weekend art course is for adults of all ages and abilities. From beginners to art enthusiasts interested to learn new or existing skills in painting & drawing. Practice at your own leisure or just relax in a creative and friendly space. The Painting for Pleasure weekend will help you get started, giving time and space to develop your creative talent and support your painting projects.

Day 1. Fully Tutored class. Saturday 24th June, 10am – 4.30am

One-to-one friendly advice and support from local artist & tutor Gareth Hutchison.

  • Practice at your own leisure or just relax in a creative and friendly space.

  • Painting for Pleasure course will help you get started and develop your creative talent and art projects.

  • For beginners interested to learn practical skills in drawing & painting.

  • For art enthusiasts & advanced learning wishing to continue developing techniques and further skills.

  • Relax, chat and enjoy an activity within a supportive people.

  • Work on your own art projects that further develop interest and passion.

Focusing on painting with oils or acrylics, we will explore colour mixing, painting layout, natural representation, painting with perspective, application techniques and composition. To offer you the chance to freely explore the subject of painting, aesthetics and visual language over the two days.

Explore the fundamental skills of observation, seeing/choosing painterly subjects and methods of interpretation through artist palette. To have produced a one of painting or a serious of work from your own original idea, themes or experiences.

New to granton:hub - Day 2. Open Studio Practice. Sunday 25th June, 10 – 5pm.

The Open Studio Practice is both for students attending day 1 of Painting for Pleasure (tutored class), wishing to continue their painting projects and practice the skills they have learned. And for persons wishing freedom to make use of the facilities & space at granton:hub to draw or paint without the need for tuition. Although the day 2 is not formally tutored, local artist Gareth Hutchison will be in attendance to give you free support and casual artistic advice. You are free to attend the class all day or come and go as you like.

  • Practise at your own pleasure & creative leisure.

  • Freedom to enjoy the time & space in a large shared studio surroundings to indulge in your creative projects or experiments.

  • Freedom to draw/paint or decide on which ever art materials you wish to bring from mixed medium large paintings to charcoal.

  • Receive a casual amount of one-to-one helpful advice throughout the day from artist in attendance when ever needed.

  • Enjoy painting or drawing on your individual projects within the company a friendly group of like minded people.

Gareth Hutchison is fully qualified and practising artist, with over 10 years of experience successfully teaching both adult education art courses and private classes. The new Granton:Hub weekend painting course has been developed as a self-directed art program, working at your own pace to build your confidence, deciding on your own themes and art materials.

Community Open Studio Practice - This is a new form and approach for granton:hub to offer a day's program that supports and encourages public and art enthusiasts alike to use the studio space & facilities at Madelvic House within a flexible shared community space for the practice of painting and drawing or other creative projects. At the moment granton:hub has only a number of easels for public use and small amount of art materials, it is advised to bring your own materials when possible or contact granton:hub with any further questions. It is hoped that with your support and others attending this type of program will show public use and desire for Flexible Shared Community Studios, granton:hub could further develop and offer the program in the future and more often.

Materials needed: Though it is recommend to bring your own watercolour A3 pad/paper or canvas and acrylics paints or canvas (of any practical size) and a range of brushes and oil paints. Gareth will give advice on your first day where to buy art materials at affordable prices and what to buy considering your art project. granton:hub can provide some of the very basic materials when and if required on the first day.

Painting projects: Bring your own projects or themes to work on each day. Gareth will help you every step of the way and support any projects you wish to try. If your unsure, Gareth will provide extra project themes or advice to get you started. Themes can range from still life, portraits and people, landscapes/seascapes, cityscapes, buildings, boats, nature, abstract to realist etc.
