Event description

Description

One of the art highlights of 2018 is bound to be Tate Britain’s exhibition All Too Human, which will celebrate how artists have captured the intense experience of life in paint. Placing the work of Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon at its heart, the exhibition will explore their shared commitment to representing both the intensities and frailties of life. Our morning’s lecture will be divided into three separate discussions. The first two of these will be dedicated to Freud and Bacon individually, and will consider the great parallels in their works. The final discussion will explore the work of Paula Rego, considered one of the most important artists working in representational art in Britain today. Her chosen medium, pastel, has sometimes been considered as overtly feminine; Dr Richard Stemp will explore how Rego’s use of pastel provides a nuanced response to women artists through the ages.
