Watercolour Day Class Painting Skies with Jane Austin
Cropping the traditional format of paper to give the expanse of sky and working as large as you feel comfortable there will be the opportunity to work on more than one piece over the day. Lots of wet so lots of drying time.

This is a true exercise in layering wet on wet, allowing the paper to dry before layering again, building tone and colour. Judging how to apply for a soft or harder edge, even adding to drying paint for a bloom edge. Learning to control the freedom of watercolour through practice, mistakes and being happy to work with the medium not fight it to be too literal. Have fun with it. The trick is knowing when to stop.

You are welcome to work how it suits you from many little sample paintings to ease yourself in or working on one large painting.

A good thick, clean white watercolour paper is a must and I prefer Bockingford 250lbs NOT with Cotman Windsor & Newton tubes of paint, building layers of colour to bounce the light.
I will provide the images, water sprays and extras but you will need paper, paint, large wash or mop brush and a smaller detail brush. I will be guiding you through with the brushes you have chosen. Suggested colours cadmium yellow, raw sienna, alizarin crimson, intense phthalo blue and indigo.

About the Artist

As a professional artist I have always worked purely in watercolour, loving the flow of paint over a structured drawing.

My style has developed into a method of applying random transparent glazes, some lights may have been retained with masking but I choose to work with paper which allows me to lift colour before adding darks and negatives. The combination gives me the ability to achieve a realistic painting whilst celebrating the unpredictability and transparency of watercolour as a medium. Many orchestrated happy accidents and textures, as well as brushstrokes, can bring life and interest to a subject.

I prefer to work on full imperial paper with large brushes and lots of water, painting on a flat surface while standing. Brushes feature largely in the application of paint but I also use many objects to add a variety of marks. In the final stages of pulling together the details and composition, I sit down and focus on what needs to be clear and what can be left to the imagination.

Materials Required

  • Winsor&Newton Cotman watercolour tubes; Cadmium yellow, raw sienna, alizarin crimson, intense phthalo blue and indigo.. You can use other makes or colours but be aware they will mix and may react differently with applied techniques.
  • Watercolour brushes, you probably have a small brush already that you are happy to work with for detail. However you will need at least one large brush, suggestion of any large mop brush, plenty of bristles when choosing cheaper synthetic if you don't have a large sable brush. AVOID square flat ended brushes a for this size as the marks are linear and limited. To lift paint however you do need a small flat square synthetic brush.
  • A good thick, clean white watercolour paper is a must and I prefer Bockingford 250lbs NOT
  • Sundries; masking fluid ( I recommend Windsor & Newton non permanent cream ), kitchen roll or cloth, table salt, HB pencil, soft rubber, I recommend a large plain white porcelain plate for mixing ( though there will be palettes available and if you possess one a calligraphy drawing pen for the masking - not essential, other means will be provided by Jane.

All materials are available online at www.calderartsupplies.co.uk. Or you can pick these up in-store before the class begins.
