Painting with Earth Pigments with Pete Ward
Overview
Starting the day at Fremington Quay to forage for ochres, and later returning to Studio KIND. at The Corn Store in Barnstaple Pannier Market, this popular workshop will offer participants a journey through geology, local history, paint making and painting with North Devon and Cornish earth pigments. After an introduction to the pigments, including the locally renowned Bideford Black, you will experiment with a range of processing techniques and binders including egg tempera, linseed oil and gum Arabic before making some paintings individually and as a group. The workshop is a starting point for your own more intimate journey with earth and natural colour.
Over the past 20 years, Peter Ward has become one of the foremost authorities on earth pigments in the UK, his work being shared through paintings, workshops, presentations, publications and numerous TV and radio appearances. His ambient good-natured character, alongside rigorous interdisciplinary research and holistic experience, providing and delivering knowledge and inspiration for many with interest in this growing dimension of personal creative expression. Whatever we think or believe about the condition of the contemporary world, open-minded contact with the materials and processes with which it is made can only further enrich and inform our lives.
No experience necessary. All materials provided but bring some containers and your own paper and brushes if you like.
