About this event

Community • Heritage

Book today and on top of visiting a medieval Scottish tower, you can also look behind the scenes at how the National Trust for Scotland is revitalizing and caring for the amazing paintings and collections in our properties.

For this event, we will be preserving two to three paintings at Alloa Tower.

  • the Erskine family portraits are loaned by the 14th Earl of Mar and hang in Alloa tower alongside other memorabilia on display and require regular conservation to ensure their longevity.
  • The NTS advocates for preventive conservation practices for its collections, however paintings and gilded frames are vulnerable to environmental, biological, chemical and physical damage or past repairs throughout the years, so sometimes need intervention or repair.
  • Come and see painting and frame conservators at Alloa Tower as they work alongside Alloa Tower’s Collection care team in assessing the portraits and frames that hang in the ancestral seat of the Erskine family, the Earls of Mar and Kellie.
  • Learn about how we assess, check and determine conservation priorities for the collections, chat to the Regional Conservator and Collections Care team and see conservation in action.
  • See what we discover as we work in situ cleaning off years of discoloured varnish from paintings and stabilise delicate gilded frames to preserve the mouldings.
