Paired Reading
Paired Reading is an evidence-based strategy to support children’s reading and improve their fluency, tone and intonation alongside developing a love of reading. The course will provide all the information required to implement Paired Reading in your school/setting.
Younger students (the tutees) are typically paired with older students (the tutors) in partnerships which are chosen by staff and intended to be encouraging. The pupils take it in turns to read aloud while the other listens and provides support if needed.
This strategy is proven to support pupils’ development in reading fluency and moreover to improve their interpersonal skills; their speaking and listening abilities and their confidence. Studies have also shown that this approach increases young people’s sense of belonging within the school community and encourages a more positive attitude towards reading and further reading for pleasure.
This session is available to all school staff but is likely to be most useful to members of staff who will utilise this approach most e.g. Teachers, Teaching Assistants or intervention teachers.
