“Pakistan Workshop on Electrochemical Energy Storage (Batteries and Supercapacitors); Mapping Expertise and Horizon Scanning”

Background

Energy storage devices (Batteries and Supercapacitors) are vital for improved transport and for domestic energy storage (UPS). When energy storage in homes (see Tesla Powerwall) is coupled with solar panels, it allows homes to be less dependent on the national grid and can be useful in villages or disaster regions where there is no grid supply. In transport applications, the use of small or large electric vehicles (or hybrids) can help to reduce pollution in urban areas which can reduce ill effects from vehicle emissions.

Themes for the Workshop:

The aim of the first workshop on electrochemical energy storage (Batteries and Supercapacitors).
1. Identify the current major researchers/capabilities/networks in Pakistan on energy storage.
2. What the priorities are for Pakistan in energy storage? (will lead to the report), e.g. hybrid transport, to replace UPS in homes?, new lighting and energy storage for villages or disaster hit regions?
3. What industries are working with them and what certified testing is going on ?
4. What natural resources might be exploitable locally for local manufacture of batteries? manufacture vs assemble?
5. What training is available worldwide for energy storage Phds etc.
6. What future facilities / infrastructure / trained researchers are needed in Pakistan to be self-sufficient in developing energy storage research? what topics can contribute now? electrical engineering, software, etc.

7. What associated expertise is required or will it stimulate? recycling? Solar based processes that can run 24h with energy storage (e.g. creating of clean drinking water in remote areas)

8. What are the opportunities for frugal innovation (entrepreneurialism) or social enterprises in this field e.g. spinouts?

9. What funding or resource is possible to move things forward (including overseas development funding) and who do we send the workshop outcomes and report to?


IMPORTANT: At this point we want to simply gather information and see if there is a willing network of labs/academics who want to come together to talk about these points for the good of the nation. There is no commitment to where the event will be and how will host it for the first one (although it is planned to host future workshops in such a way to allow good networking across labs with expertise). The workshop will lead to a report that will be coordinated by Prof Jawwad Darr and written by a few of the lead academics and we will take the outputs / recommendations from it and consider some kind of road-mapping exercise.

This report can be circulated or presented to funding agencies and attending universities who can decide what investments they wish to make. We are not proposing a new centre for energy storage research at this point as its too early for that, but are proposing that we get a network established. In closing, we are very keen to go step by step an ensure to help to train researchers and get funding from overseas and Pakistani agencies. We expect that there is most likely to be a lack of trained researchers in this area in Pakistan and we believe that we will have to train a generation of new people in this area and its not a quick fix, it will take time, probably 3-5 years min to get enough trained people. These are most likely to be the people who will be able to lead the energy storage centres of excellence which may one day be carrying out such work to a high level.

3pm restart WORKSHOP in Business incubation Centre (BIC) meeting room

close 4.30 pm.

those wishing to stay behind after this time will begin to put a report outline together from workshop.



technical notes:
energy storage focus we are talking about covers what you would consider batteries, for applications such a large capacity UPS (see Tesla Powerwall) based on Li ion or Na ion battery. This also includes supercapacitors or batteries for electric vehicles to reduce polluting on the city. This technology can be used for a wide range of applications basically from homes to transport to wind turbines, solar cells, etc. i do not include fuel cells in this or hydrogen based energy storage in this area as it would get complicated. The research needs materials engineers, software , automation experts, electrical engineers, eletrochemists, and other scientific disciplines.
