Event description
Policy seminar on palliative care and people with learning disabilities in Northern Ireland.

About this Event

There are around 42,000 adults with a learning disability in Northern Ireland. People with learning disabilities are more likely to die at an earlier age than the general population – often with chronic or terminal illnesses like respiratory disease, heart disorders and cancer – but research suggests they do not always have equitable access to palliative and end of life care when they need it.

Communication difficulties may mean pain and other symptoms aren’t identified and properly managed. Lack of screening or diagnostic overshadowing may cause delays in diagnosis, meaning those who are referred for palliative care may only receive it at the end stage of the disease. People with learning disabilities will also often be protected from knowledge about their prognosis by loved ones, preventing them from participating in advance care planning.

On Monday 4 November 2019, Marie Curie will bring together a panel of local and international experts to explore these crucial issues and more. Delegates will hear from:

  • Prof Irene Tuffrey-Wijne – Professor of Intellectual Disability and Palliative Care, Kingston University and St George’s University of London
  • Colin Harper – leading Northern Ireland expert in mental capacity law and Chief Executive of Camphill Communities Trust
  • Dr Dorry McLaughlin – former Lecturer in Palliative Care and Chronic Illness at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queen’s University Belfast
  • Una Boyle – Learning Support Mentor at Southern Regional College and former social worker
  • Members of the ARC NI TILII (Telling It Like It Is) group

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience, moderated by Christ Lyttle MLA, Chair of the All Party Group on Learning Disability in the Northern Ireland Assembly.
