We are very pleased to invite attendees to the first event in our colloquium series on Philosophy and the Mental Health Act!

The event is a panel discussion and will take place at 5PM GMT on Thursday the 20th of January.

Given the current Covid-19 restrictions in place at King's College London, this event will take place fully online on Zoom.

Professor Sir Simon Wessely is Regius Professor of Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry at KCL. He established the King’s Centre for Military Health Research in 1996, and remains the Co-director, and since 2013 has been the Director of the PHE NIHR Health Protection Unit for Emergency Response and Preparedness, which has been very active during the COVID-19 crisis. He is a Past President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal Society of Medicine. Between 2017 -19 he led the Independent Review of the Mental Health Act, which paved the way for new legislation in 2022.

Professor Judy Laing is a Professor of Mental Health Law & Policy in the University of Bristol Law School. She is the current Faculty Admissions and Recruitment Officer for Law and a member of the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute's steering group. She has published on mental health law, currently teaches medical law to undergraduate law students, and co-ordinates the Law & Governance for Mental and Social Wellbeing unit on the LLM in Health, Law & Society.

Dr Gareth Owen is Reader at KCL and honorary consultant psychiatrist at the South London Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. His research has focused on decision-making capacity and related areas, spanning theoretical to practical issues as well as policy impact. He leads the Wellcome Trust Mental Health and Justice Project. As a consultant psychiatrist Gareth works in liaison psychiatry at King’s College Hospital. He is also a founding member and trustee of the Maudsley Philosophy Group Charity.
