This is a series of three online courses that will explore the assessment stage of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) provision for symbol based communication. It maps across to IPAACKS Level Two (please see further information on CASEE Eventbrite bio).

The first session will focus on: Assessment

  • A review of the models that support assessment of communication & thinking about AAC.
  • Different access methods for AAC.
  • Different language organisation in AAC systems.
  • Language assessment, how we might adapt AAC systems for the individual.
  • Access assessment, how we might adapt AAC systems for the individual.
  • Discussion of different cases & troubleshooting.

The second session will focus on: Provision

  • Adapting the environment to promote AAC use.
  • Modelling or Aided Language Stimulation – using and learning AAC systems.
  • Training and engaging communication partners.
  • Goal setting for AAC.
  • Troubleshooting common issues when introducing AAC.

The final session will focus on: Maintenance

  • Promoting functional use of AAC.
  • Increasing the complexity of AAC.
  • Thinking about how to expand opportunities for AAC use.
  • Embedding AAC in environments.
  • Celebrating success & troubleshooting issues of abandonment, use and support.
  • Considering when you might refer to CASEE.

This series is aimed at health and education professionals working with children or adults using AAC. All very welcome, but please note the symbolised AAC focus of these sessions. Should this series become oversubscribed, priority will be given to professionals working in the East of England.

Each session will be 2 hours long and delivered on Zoom, the joining details for each session will be sent out prior to the day.

1. Paper Based AAC 1: Tuesday 11th November, 2025; 2-4pm

2. Paper Based AAC 2: Tuesday 18th November, 2025; 2-4pm

3. Paper Based AAC 3: Tuesday 25th November, 2025; 2-4pm
