Parampara Odissi dance recital Sonali Mishra
Wed 26 April 2017, 18:30 – 20:30 BST
Parampara is the Sanskrit word for ‘tradition’ or ‘continuation.’ Sonali Mishra, a second-generation Indian-American currently residing in India, will be presenting her Odissi repertoire showcasing choreography by different generations of Odissi dance gurus. Parampara is a celebration of the timelessness of the Indian classical artistic tradition.
Sonali Mishra received her initial training in Odissi under Chitralekha and Ellora Patnaik in Canada. Since 1995, she has been pursuing further intensive training in India, first at the Orissa Dance Academy with Gurus Aruna Mohanty, Bichitrananda Swain and Ramesh Chandra Jena, and then later at Srjan with Gurus Sujata Mohapatra and Guru Ratikant Mohapatra and Guru Kumkum Lal.
Sonali has performed as a soloist in various festivals throughout the USA, UK, India, Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Austria, Portugal, and Spain. She has been conferred the titles of ‘International Nritya-Shiromani’ Award, Nrithya Vilasini, and Natya Bharati for her noteworthy contribution to the promotion, preservation and popularization of Odissi. In addition to performing, Sonali has conducted a number of workshops and lecture demonstrations at leading universities throughout the US, Europe and India. In 2014, Sonali founded an online quarterly magazine, Global Rasika, dedicated to cultivate critical thinking and discourse in the field of Odissi dance. Sonali relocated to Odisha India in 2011, where she continues to train and perform.
