Event description

Description

Autism research is increasingly recognising the importance of the autistic voice and the lived experiences of members of the autistic and wider autism communities. Likewise, the abilities of autistic people to harness the written word as a means of self-expression and communication is being demonstrated in the plethora of blogs and other written outputs that are becoming increasingly available.

In this workshop, we will explore collaboratively how we, as PARC, and as an autistic/autism academic community can work collaboratively to develop, and increase access to, academic publishing that represents the voice of the autistic and wider autism communities.

We will discuss issues including the following, and seek to establish a way forward:

  • What have been our expereinces of academic publishing relating to autism?
  • What do we want in terms of publishing opportunities?
  • How can we work collaoboratively to develop autonomous and accessible publishing opportunities?
  • What skills/insights do we bring that we may be willing to share?
  • How can we work to ensure that the autistic/autism community is represented in our work? How can we ourselves be accessible and inclusive, and promote these values in our work?

Discussion will be informal, and facilitated by the organisers. There will be the opportunity to raise further thoughts/expereinces/concerns. Alternatively, you can email the organisers in advance if you would like to add to the agenda for discussion in that way.

There will be the opportunity after the workshop to go to a nearby coffee shop or pub in order to continue discussions and/or socialise with others attending the workshop.

The exact location of the venue for the workshop will be emailed to participants nearer the time.

If you have any needs and/or preferences that will make the workshop (more) accessible to you, please feel free to contact the organisers and discuss this.
