What is the Parent Empowerment Project (PEP)?

The PEP is a two-year initiative designed to support up to 300 parents and carers from Black communities in Lewisham, helping them advocate effectively for their children’s education and well-being.

Why should I take part in the virtual workshop?

You should take part to help you effectively communicate with schools, challenge decisions, and navigate the education system. It can help you to become much more confident in your dealings with your child's school, with a clearer understanding of your rights and responsibilities.

Who else with be present?

You will be able to meet with other parents from your community to share similar experiences and build a supportive network. Parents can ask questions and share concerns without judgment.

Why are you doing these virtually?

These workshops are virtual to provide greater convenience and flexibility for parents who can join from home, fitting around work, childcare, or other commitments.

Why is it focused on Black communities?

Seclusions and exclusions remain disproportionately reflected in the Black community, specifically those from mixed and Caribbean backgrounds, and those with SEND. Training is tailored to the lived experiences of parents in Lewisham from such communities, ensuring relevance and representation.

The PEP consists of three key parts: Parent Expos – community events to share information and resources. Advocacy Training – online sessions to upskill parents in self-advocacy. Parent Drop-In Sessions – safe, local spaces for parents to access direct support.

Do I have to attend all three parts of the programme?

No. Parents and carers can choose the activities that best meet their needs, though we encourage participation specifically in the virtual sessions as a means of building powerful self-advocacy skills.

No. Participation in all parts of this programme is free for all eligible parents and carers.

What kinds of issues can parents get help with?

The virtual sessions will support parents with issues such as navigating the school system, school exclusions and alternatives such as managed moves and transfers, admissions, special educational needs & disabilities (SEND), EHCPs, understanding rights and responsibilities and finding resources.
