Event description

Description

Following the successful event "Introduction to Dr. Thomas Gordon's book: Parent Effectiveness Training", Free We Grow Ltd. is now hosting a P.E.T course within the premises of Dacres Wood in Forest Hill. Val Winfield, instructor and UK representative will be leading the course.

The course will start on January 23, 2018, and will run every Tuesday (except February 13) for 8-weeks with sessions of 3 hours (6:30pm - 9:30pm). The fee of the course is of £250 p/p + a non-refundable pre-registration fee of £16.27 p/p.

What is P.E.T?

Created by award-winning psychologist Dr. Thomas Gordon in 1962, Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.) is one of the oldest and most copied parenting programmes that has helped millions of parent around the world.

Whether you are parent of a toddler or a teenager, you know that parenting can be challenging- even overwhelming- at times. Children do not come with an instruction manual and being a parent does not always mean that one automatically or instinctively knows what to do and how to do it.

Based on sound phycological knowledge and principles, P.E.T helps parents to learn new skills to deal effectively with any situation and teaches proven communication skills that really work. When parents use these skills, they are amazed by the significant improvements in both, their families and all of their relationships.

P.E.T. does not preach, blame or prescribe what sort of parent you should be. It gives you powerful skills for you to use in your way in your family.

What will you learn?

In this 8-week course, you will learn the following skills:

  • PROBLEM OWNERSHIP: How to identify who owns the problem and communicate and listen effectively to our children.

  • ACTIVE LISTENING: An effective way to help others with their problems.

  • ‘I’ MESSAGES: An effective way for parents to take ownership of their feelings to modify children's unacceptable behaviour without blaming or judging them.

  • PROBLEM SOLVING: How to work with our children to identify conflicts and generate, evaluate and implement the solutions that work best for all.

  • CONSULTING: How to share, suggest and offer advice to our children rather than preach, impose or demand.

Course Content

The course is divided into the following topics:

About the instructor, Val Winfield.

P.E.T. is a serious course of study delivered by the authorised instructor and G.T.I. representative in the UK, Val Winfield. Her training and experience as a paediatric speech and language therapist lulled her into a false sense of security about being a parent. Two arguing toddlers highlighted the need for a different approach, which P.E.T. provided. Having a clear structure for understanding all family conflicts reduced anxiety immediately. Being given the skills to deal with them, while avoiding the use of punishment and threats, was like winning the lottery. We could then deal with any conflict, problem or difference and continue to have close relationships. Our kids are confident, responsible, good communicators and great company. P.E.T. works!
