Description

Parental Substance Misuse and Childhood Adversity: Intervening with the Parent to Improve Parent and Child Outcomes

This seminar has been organised by the Substance Misuse and Child Welfare Special Interest Group.

The guest speaker is Dr Ruth McGovern, Senior Research Associate/NIHR Post Doctorate Fellow, Institute of Health and Society, Newcastle University.

The seminar will present the programme of Ruth's research which examines parental substance misuse. She will discuss the findings of a recently concluded rapid evidence assessment into the association between child adverse health, psychological, educational and social outcomes and non-dependent parental substance misuse and on-going work examining effective interventions with both alcohol misusing parents and non-using parents within substance exposed families.

Ruth is a NIHR Post Doctorate Fellow and a Senior Research Associate. Her research aims to improve both health and social needs through the reduction of lifestyle risk. In particular, her work is concerned with developing and evaluating behaviour change interventions to reduce alcohol and drug use. As a senior researcher, she has been involved in numerous randomised controlled trials examining brief intervention with alcohol users (both young people and adults) including research with pregnant women and parents and a feasibility trial of psychological interventions to reduce substance misuse in looked after children. Ruth was recently awarded an NIHR Post Doctorate Fellowship to examine the feasibility of reducing risky drinking in parents of children referred to children's social care and is the lead supervisor of an Alcohol Research UK studentship which seeks to develop family-involved interventions for young people with risky drinking and mental health difficulties. She is a qualified and registered social worker, with over 20 years-experience in social work practice and education specialising in substance misuse.
