Parenting Post Trauma
Event Information
About this Event
This session is designed anyone who is working with parents who have experienced trauma, while at the same time recognising that we may also cross this professional space with personal experience, as I do as the facilitator.
The focus is twofold: we will be deepening the understanding of the impact of trauma upon parenting and the parent while also highlighting practical ways to disrupt the transmission of trauma.
We will look at:
Trauma
Epigenetics and Intergenerational Trauma
Understanding The Relationship between Parenting, Trauma and Shame
Building Relational Systems
Collective Care

"My work is focused on the experiences of complex families and so I'm delighted to be joining Lisa for this session on parenting post-trauma. In this forthcoming talk I will be presenting findings from my doctoral and post-doctoral research, which considers how parents experience intervention and change, in context of their own life stories. My research investigates stories of families who relapse repeatedly as well as those who are successful and confident long term. The learning from these stories is helping to inform local practice and I hope to illuminate possible ways to reduce relapse and re-referral, by understanding more about the factors in these two groups of parents. In my talk I will be explaining how the threat and cognitive dissonance experienced by traumatised families may impact their ability to learn, change, and sustain new behaviours, and asking us to consider the journey travelled for parents at the heart of their families."
"Lisa makes participants feel part of the group. She has a very engaging and effective way of training. It's almost as if I'm in the same room as she is. Her knowledge is vast. I feel very safe with her." (Survey Feedback November 2020)
"Lisa is just always so real, open, relaxed and comfortable that I immediately feel at ease and welcomed into the space. Despite her extensive knowledge, experience and professionalism, her down to earth, authentic, humble approach models everything she advocates & stands up for. In a world full of hierarchy & importance this reminds me that we are all worthy. Lisa is someone I look to in terms of reflecting on my own journey, my work and how I want to be in the world! Thank you!" (Survey Feedback November 2020)
