What are the sessions:

Expert by Experience sessions are hosted by the Parenting Service at West Sussex Mind. They are regular training support groups with themes around Mental Health, to help parents and carers support their children and young people. Some of the topics for 2024 are: Self-Esteem; Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA); Autism and ADHD alongside Mental Health, Self-Harm and much more.

Guest speakers are trainers with lots of relevant lived/professional experience. They deliver a session which includes a presentation on the given topic and then the session is open for questions aimed at the guest speaker, giving parents and carers the opportunity to build on their knowledge, skills and confidence when supporting their children and young people. These groups will have parents and carers attending who are experiencing similar things, which provides some peer support by encouraging one another, and building each other up (and ultimately helps people to feel less alone in their situation).

Session details:

Supporting the Mental Health of Children and Young People with ADHD:

This session will explore the basic characteristics which may be presented in children and young people with ADHD and provide practical tips on how parents and carers can best support the mental health of those with ADHD.

How to access:

These sessions are open to care-givers of children and young people experiencing difficult times with their Mental Health (please see eligibility criteria below).

Eligibility:

If you have a child or young person aged 5-18 (or school age) and they are struggling with their mental health, and you live or your child/young person attends school in West Sussex, you can access our support.

If you'd like to sign up to the Parenting Peer Support Service, please contact our central Help Point on 0300 303 5652 (Mon to Fri, 10am to 4pm) or email helppoint@westsussexmind.org, stating you would like a referral to the service, and a member of the Parenting team will contact you to take some details.
