Event Details

On 19th April, 1917, after a three-month journey over land and sea, a thousand Chinese men arrived in Le Havre, France, weary and bewildered. This was the first batch of the Chinese Labour Corps (CLC), recruited by the British to provide logistical help to the Western Allies. They would be followed by several tens of thousands, mainly from Shandong Province, thus forming one of the largest labour corps involved in World War One. At the end of the war, many stayed on to clear the land of ordnance and restore it to agricultural fields. They dug up the dead and buried them in the cemeteries that dot the rural landscapes of northern France and Belgium. Yet their contribution to the Allied cause is little mentioned and has never been officially acknowledged.

In an entertaining and informative talk Frances Wood, author of Betrayed Ally: China and the Great War and former curator of Chinese Collections at the British Library, will outline the historical background to the CLC story, with insights into the political manoeuvres and debates in Parliament. Her talk will be followed by an oral history film Forgotten Faces of the Great War: The Chinese Labour Corps, presented by Peng Wenlan, documentary filmmaker and director of The Meridian Society's two-year project commemorating the CLC and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The event will be hosted by Lord Wallace of Saltaire a member of the government’s Advisory Board for the Commemoration of World War One . There will be a Q&A after the screening.

This event is free of charge but registration is required. Please allow 20 minutes to get through security.
