Event description

Description

Assist continues with momentum with 'Our Voice' and invites you to attend the next event aimed at discovering more about Women in Parliament and could you campaign about something you are passionate about?

Women in Parliament - Take it Further

Who makes the nations decisions? Are there enough women at the table? Are women unrepresented? Find out why this is important and how you can influence the UK Parliament and get YOUR voice heard.

Are you an experienced campaigner? Perhaps you’ve already attended some of our other Women in Parliament sessions? Maybe you are self-employed, an employer, work in the STEM sectors, digital or service industry? Are you a student, academic, a civil servant or in the private sector or the NHS? Something may have happened to you or your family and you need to bring about change? This is for women out there that see the need for change.....

This session will help you take skills in campaigning and research to the next level. You will learn how to make the most of the resources available on www.parliament.uk, including MPs and Peers, briefing papers, reports and recommendations. You’ll also discover how to seek input from other national and international bodies and NGOs such as the Welsh Assembly, Scottish Parliament, Fawcett Society and UN women.

The morning will be a workshop delivered by Lynn Hobson from Parliament Outreach. To follow you will again have the opportunity to debate with speakers on both side of the fence, a community activist, Lucy Patterson and a political figure (to be confirmed), along with Lynn and your fellow 'Empowered Women'.

Want to know more...

‘Our Voice’ is a two year project to encourage not only Tees Valley business and professional women, but all to discover UK parliament. With the support of those that know "Parliament is a vital part of our democracy" we should use our vote, our voice, scrutinise the work of Government and hold it to account.

We have planned a selction of Parliament Outreach workshops, dinner debates, visits from MP’s and campaigners with a little on the history that covers women’s suffrage. We aim to have cluster groups active in having a voice on parliamentary matters and campaigning on the chosen relevant issues that the Our Voice group decides should be addressed. The aim is for further understanding of how national decisions affect you, discover if and how you can influence these by getting YOUR voice heard while engaging with MP’s, councillors, the Houses, Select Committees and other campaigners.

Who is Lynn...

Lynn Hobson

Lynn Hobson, Parliamentary Outreach & Engagement Team

Lynn Hobson is a Senior Community Outreach and Engagement Officer (North East, Yorkshire and The Humber) for the Houses of Parliament. Lynn encourages more people from under-represented groups to get involved in the questions, debates and decisions made in Parliament which affect them. Helping people to understand how Parliament works, demonstrating how the public can get involved at a local and national level. www.parliament.uk/get-involved/

What’s on offer? We are to run a series of workshops specially aimed at empowering women giving them the information they need to start getting their voices heard and how to get an issue onto the UK Parliament's agenda. The women in Parliament programme aims to get more women involved.

Who is Lucy...

Lucy Patterson – LPH Associates.

Lucy Patterson is the Founder of LPH Associates and their Social Sector Specialist. Lucy is a big believer in the power of social enterprise and community engagement and believes that such ‘grass roots’ actions can have a major impact on improving the lives of local communities. As such, when Lucy was faced with the possibility of living in a local authority ward governed solely by UKIP councillors, she took a stand and stood as an Independent candidate.

What will Lucy share? Lucy to have an open and honest conversation of the highs and lows of becoming an 'Independent' candidate in a recent council by-election. Get an insight in to the formalities of the election process and ask questions, especially if you’re currently wondering if this is how you could make a difference? Find out if there are barriers as a female taking this path to have her community’s voice heard and listen to the alternative ways Lucy has since gotten involved in bringing positive change to her local area. Find out how YOU can get involved in the matters that YOU care about.

With the recent General Election and continued changes the UK are about to embark on how can you choose to ignore the issues that impact on you and your families daily life? Our Voice can help you find a group of women who want to know more and understand how our democracy runs.
