Description

Parliamentary event hosted by Sarah Champion MP

Modern slavery is best understood as centred on destroying the freedom of an individual – their freedom to choose to refuse certain work or to stop working, their freedom to control their body – so that they can be exploited. This freedom is taken away by threats, violence, coercion, deception and an abuse of power.

The Wonder Foundation has been leading a youth empowerment project for the last 6 months, which has been building awareness amongst young people of this awful crime.

Young people, drawn from a range of backgrounds, have been learning from experts in modern slavery prevention and rehabilitation and developing their own ideas to protect those vulnerable to modern slavery or to improve support available to survivors.

Through this process, they have come up with 3 different campaign initiatives centred on raising awareness and bringing enhanced support to survivors. These projects include;

  • Combatting slavery in the hospitality sector

  • Increasing accountability and awareness in local government ofmodern slavery insupply chains

  • Providing access to English language learning for survivors.

Please join us on the 5th of February, 2019, in Committee Room 14 at Parliament, to listen to our young people present their campaigns aimed at ending this awful crime and improving support for survivors. The event will be hosted by Sarah Champion MP, and we are expecting a wide range of MPs, journalists, third-sector specialists and academics to attend.

To discuss this further, please contact Olivia Darby, Director of Policy and Campaigns at the Wonder Foundation.
