Event description

Description

This programme is delivered by Dr Judith Wester, an expert in Death Education. Dr Wester is an academic who has committed herself to transferring contemporary research on death, dying and bereavement into language everyone can understand. She has taught at college, university and community levels, believing everyone from young to old can benefit. Her vast experience includes working with home-care hospice, developing Death Studies programmes in higher education, and creating the unique Life Lessons programme for young people. She also trained and worked as an HIV hot-line crisis counsellor.

Talking about death is important for anyone who needs to communicate with someone before or after a death or loss, whether it is a young person, adult or the elderly. At CEDAR we teach you how to make these conversations easy, compassionate and rewarding, while expanding your knowledge about death, dying and loss in healthy ways.

This course will teach you a variety of ways you can begin those uncomfortable conversations or deliver bad news in a range of circumstances and with a diverse group of people. This course is suitable for anyone but will be of particular benefit to adult carers, pastoral care, those who work in education; and the public sector such as police, fire & ambulance, community workers; and professionals such as solicitors, GPs, and those in healthcare.

This is highly interactive course with visual aids and group participation. Dr Wester’s enthusiasm for this topic is both effective and contagious.

The topics covered include:

  • What is death?
  • Why talking about death is important
  • Notions of time and why it matters to the bereaved
  • How parents grieve and how children grieve
  • Social and Cultural aspects of death & loss
  • The social history of death and why it matters today
  • Myths about death and how they influence our responses to death
  • Different experiences of grief
  • Understanding weeping and crying
  • Some helpful tips and guidance
