Event description

Description

Dapper Gent and Blue Badge Guide Barry Bennet is your host for a seafront stroll, exploring Brighton and Hove’s extraordinary wealth of fabulous architecture and the fascinating history behind the city’s beautiful Regency and Victorian Italianate buildings.

Part I: Doxies, Dukes and Duchesses, begins at the floral clock in Palmeira Square.

Guests soak up the majesty of Hove's residential development as we concentrate upon the birth of Brunswick Town, its flagship terraces and square. Born there: the gay godfather of the Victorian left. Expired there: a young naval midshipman whose open head wounds lay on Admiral Horatio Nelson's shoulder. Painted by the eminent John Constable, our journey continues along the seafront, marvelling at modernist Embassy Court, once home to both actor Rex Harrison and writer Keith Waterhouse. We reach Bedford Square facing one of the last surviving Victorian Bandstands, before we conclude in Regency Square, formerly home of the smouldering, 'rags to riches' Duchess of St Albans. Oscar Wilde's carriage awaits to whisk you away for well-earned victuals.
