In collaboration with artist Lucy Marsden, the Bakehouse is hosting a day of collective exploration and learning on the subject of Great Yarmouth's historic herring industry. We'll be thinking about the labour of migrant workers, like the iconic and much-photgraphed Herring Girls, and how migration is viewed in the town today.
- First, we'll be meeting at the entrance to the Pleasure Beach Gardens, next to Christopher's Tea Rooms. Together we'll take a walk along the south end of Yarmouth's beach, looking at the dunes and the edible foods that grow there. We'll also take some seawater away in jars, in order to make our own sea salt later in the session.
- We'll then walk through the town, looking at various industrial and historic sites on the way, before arriving at the Bakehouse on Stonecutters Way.
- There, inspired by various modes of herring production and preservation, we'll try pickling, salting and smoking foods of our own. We'll also package up our produce, as well as distilling our sea water down into Yarmouth sea salt, ready to be dried and used at a later date.
A free vegetarian lunch will be served at the Bakehouse - menu TBC, but please do let us know if you have any allergies or other dietary requirements.
Please let us know if you have any particular accessibility needs! At the Bakehouse, we have wheelchair ramps to allow entrance to and exit from the building. We have mobility aids in our bathroom, though the bathroom itself is unfortunately not big enough to be wheelchair accessible. Let us know if you have any questions about the space or our walking route.
Lastly, tickets are free - we're just asking attendees to book their places in advance so that we can keep an eye on numbers.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
