This one-day online workshop (10:00-16:00) introduces you to the legal systems in play during the early modern period in England and Wales, as well as the records created by these systems.
During the workshop, you will be introduced to the main law courts of the early modern period, including King’s Bench, Star Chamber, and Chancery. Sessions focus on how to find records using online catalogues and paper calendars, what the records look like, how to read the records, and how the various courts interacted with each other.
At the end of the workshop, you will have a general understanding of the main law courts active in early modern England and Wales, and how to find these records in the collections at The National Archives (and elsewhere).
