Event description

Description

The Postgraduate Archival Skills Training (PAST) programme offers students a unique opportunity to obtain the skills and knowledge needed to undertake academic research at The National Archives.

This Medieval Material Culture Workshop will provide you with the essential skills to identify and access original source material amongst the records of government and the central legal courts. During each session you will receive tuition and guidance on a range of archival research skills and undertake practical exercises involving hands-on document work. The workshop will be led by our medieval records specialists Dr Sean Cunningham, Dr Paul Dryburgh and Dr Euan Roger.

Short themed sessions will look at how students can identify and utilise evidence of material culture among the varied series of legal and administrative documents held by The National Archives. These will include sessions on ‘Inventories and Probates’, ‘Material Culture in the Royal Household’, ‘The Materiality of War and Treason’, ‘Building Accounts,’ and ‘Seals and Visual Culture’. At the end of the course you will have increased confidence in your ability to find and access previously challenging medieval documents and to read and understand their contents.

This event is aimed at current taught postgraduates, PhD students, postdoctoral and early career researchers. There are no pre-requisites for attendance, although a basic understanding of Latin is recommended.

This is a one day workshop on site at The National Archives. Tea and coffee at registration and lunch are provided.

For more information about the PAST programme please see The National Archives' website or email past@nationalarchives.gsi.gov.uk.
