Event description

Description

The Postgraduate Archival Skills Training (PAST) programme offers students a unique opportunity to obtain the skills and knowledge needed to undertake academic research using original records at The National Archives.

This 19th and 20th Century Design History workshop will provide you with the essential skills to identify and access original design records - many of which are unexplored and unknown to design historians. During each session you will receive tuition and guidance on a range of archival research skills from our design records specialists, and you will also undertake practical exercises involving hands-on document work.

The workshop will focus on the vast collection of design records held by The National Archives – from 19th century fabrics, wallpapers and trademarks to 20th century Festival of Britain records.

The day will begin with an introduction to the catalogues and finding aids that will help you to identify and find records within our design collections.

Further sessions will focus on designs registered with the Board of Trade and Stationers’ Hall to preserve the rights of the designers and manufacturers. These records include samples, drawings, paintings and photographs of original designs and reflect the economic, social and cultural history of the time.

The final session looks at the records of the Festival of Britain – an iconic celebration of British creativity.

At the end of the workshop you will have an increased understanding of the range of design records held at The National Archives and the confidence to search the catalogue using techniques practised on the day.

This event is aimed at current taught postgraduate and PhD students, although other researchers are welcome to attend. There are no pre-requisites for attendance.

This is a one-day workshop on site at The National Archives. Tea and coffee at registration is provided as well as lunch.

For more information about the PAST programme please see The National Archives' website or email past@nationalarchives.gsi.gov.uk.
