About this Event

Animal Portrait for Beginners

Learn the art of capturing the unique likeness and character of an animal you love at this fantastic beginner’s workshop with the exceptionally talented artist Sarah Watson. The workshop is held in our comfortable, 100sqm craft barn, that offers inspiring views of the beautiful countryside of one of Nottinghamshire’s finest vineyards. You will spend 3.5 hours relaxing and enjoy learning a new skill, while Sarah guides you through step by step showing you how to apply soft pastels with expressively identifying marks to capture his or her unique character, by the end of the session; you will have ideally completed your piece.

All materials, tools and refreshments are included but you will need to bring a good A4 photo of what you would like to draw, further details below.

Outline of your time with us

  • Welcome with refreshments and introduction to your tutor Sarah Watson
  • You will start by sketching your image in pencil
  • After a short practice with the pastels, you will start on your picture
  • Enjoy a short break with light refreshments and snack
  • Pinpoint key identifying marks and features to capture pet’s uniqueness
  • By the end of your session, you will have completed your art work.

Photo selection – Select a good, well detailed, evenly lit colour photograph or magazine cutting no smaller than A5 size, ideally A4 of your favourite animal. Recommended a printout rather than an original photo.

Please note - Depending on the government restrictions at the time the workshop is due to take place, it should be able to go ahead outside and weather permitting if the area is in tier 3. We are a COVID-19 secure venue and continually update our procedures in line with government guidance.

About Sarah Watson BA (Hons)

Sarah Watson explores the beauty and dynamism of the natural landscape, travelling to the most stunning and diverse areas of the UK to paint. Closer to home she is particularly in thrall to the constantly changing colours and patterns in the crop fields and the endlessly changing drama in the clouds of Lincolnshire’s enormous skies. She has exhibited in one woman shows in Grantham, London and the Lake District, and been represented at the prestigious Fletcher Gate Art Gallery in Nottingham and Gallery6 in Newark. She featured on the Sky Arts Landscape Artist Of The Year in 2016, and was accepted for membership of the exclusive Lincolnshire Artists’ Society who used one of her paintings as the poster for this year’s Art In The Barn group show at Doddington Hall.

Born in Oakham, Rutland, in 1972, Sarah graduated from De Montfort University with a First Class degree in Combined Arts in 1994, specializing in Abstract Painting. After 15 years working in the music industry, she settled in Grantham to devote her time entirely to her own art and that of her talented students who, say inspire her as much as the countryside around her.
