About this event

Learn to repair woven (non-stretch) cotton clothing with patches and decorative running stitches sewn by hand. Fix your clothes or other textiles and make them wearable art!

Kelly (Oswestry and Borders Repair Cafe Fixpert and maker behind upcycling business Team Sikel) will lead this workshop. You'll see some examples of patched clothing and learn some top tips to add decorative reinforcement to celebrate the repair and make your items one of a kind.

Bring along a cotton garment or textile to mend. Good examples are: non-stretch trousers/tops/dresses, tea towels, pillow cases, sheets, etc. Just make sure the tag says 100% cotton and it is NOT knitwear (eg t-shirts, socks, or jumpers).

Teas/coffee and biscuits will be provided. If you have similar fabric to patch with bring it along, but there will be a range of scrap fabrics for you to use at the session, as well as needles, thread, and other helpful tools. Be prepared to experimend.

Unsure what to bring? Message me!

Don't have anything to mend? There will be ample scrap fabrics for you to practice on!

This will be a hand-stitching class requring dexterity and involving close work, please bring reading glasses along if you need them.

Appropriate for aspiring menders 16+.

About the tutor:

Kelly has been sewing for decades, but fell in love with visible mending about five years ago. Not content with just repairing her family's clothes, she regularly volunteers at Oswestry and Borders repair cafe, and enjoys the variety of mending styles she gets to use on the items brought in. She's passionate about reducing waste by repairing or repurposing thing that others might consider rubbish. She has a vintage darning mushroom collection she's trying (and failing) to keep under control.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of thing can I bring to mend?

Non-stretch (e.g. not knitwear), woven cotton textiles such as trousers, shirts, blouses, canvas tote bags, sheets, pillow cases, etc. Avoid clothing with linings or waterproof finishes. Message me if you're unsure, or just practice on scrap fabrics provided.

Where can I park?

There are numerous council car parks around Shrewsbury. Abbey Foregate is the closest and is free on Sundays.

Is this class appropriate for those with learning differences?

This class is taught by one tutor. She does not have a qualification or significant experience teaching those with learning disabilities. If you still wish to attend but need additional support, please message before booking. I will create a special free ticket for a learning support assistant.

Is this a sashiko class?

While the topics covered in this class can be applied to sashiko, this class will not cover that traditional Japanese technique. We will focus on freeform stitching, creating your own designs, with some examples and templates provided.
