Event description

Description

  • Explore what demand means and the impact this may have on someone with PDA.
  • Will help us to understand how someone engages in demand avoidance tactics,
  • How PDA may appear to those who see it from the outside in and how different that is to what the person is actually experiencing.
  • How PDA may have been misdiagnosed
  • How to go about getting an assessment
  • The overarching factor of heightened levels of anxiety.

From this understanding of how the person experiences and embodies their world, we will then look at how to begin to develop practical tools on communicate and engagement with the person in a less anxiety provoking way. The presentation will finish on looking at how PDA may be exacerbated by lack of sleep and transitions.

The Empower project is a Big Lottery funded initiative through the Reaching Out Supporting Families Programme which support Families across Mid Ulster and Antrim & Newtownabbey Council areas. The focus of the project is to support children under 12 with Autism, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, their parents and the wider family circle to enhance confidence and learn together to develop skills to support their children.
