Seminar 1 (14 and 21 July 2020 12.00 London Time) - Researching your Options
How to start thinking about finding a topic you want to research. Working out what types of research interest you, what sort of techniques you want to/are able to use and what sort of topics work well/get funded. This session will also look at PhD application timelines and deadlines, as well as entry requirements.
Seminar 2 (28 July and 4 August 2020 12.00 London Time) - Finding a Supervisor and the initial pitch
Who will you work with and where will you carry out your research? What is more important, the institution or the supervisor? How many places should you apply for? This sessions addresses how to go make these initial choices. This session prepares you to start the first stage of your PhD journey - sending out a speculative email to a potential supervisor.

This session looks at steps to take before applying for a PhD to develop yourself as a candidate and researcher.
Seminar 4 (25 August and 1 September 2020 12.00 London Time) - Honing your proposal
What do you need to apply? This session looks at the main application deadlines and how to keep track of them. We cover how to go about assembling your application documents.
Seminar 5 (8 and 15 September 2020 12.00 London Time) - Making your Application
What do you need to apply? This session will look at the main application deadlines and how to keep track of them as well as how to go about assembling your application documents.
Seminar 6 (22 and 29 September 2020 12.00 London Time) - Finding Funding
This session will focus on the different types and main sources of funding, the chances of getting them and how to apply for them. We will look at the main source software funding, how they apply to different types of student (e.g. home international, EU, part time), as well as how to make a competitive funding application.
Seminar 7 (6 and 13 October 2020 12.00 London Time) - The interview
What are the general principals on how to handle an academic interview? This session will look at different interview requirements andformats between institutions. We Prepare you for interview questions, looking at ow to answer them.
Seminar 8 (20 and 27 October 2020 12.00 London Time) - Getting ready to start
This session will cover steps to take before beginning a new programme. These include practical arrangements as well as more developmental steps, such as raising your academic profile and continuing to build your academic network.
Seminar 9 (3 and 10 November 2020 12.00 London Time) - Publishing, communications and social media for academics
Learn about communications techniques to get your research noticed, and how to tailor your research utputs to different audienced.
Seminar 10 (17 and 24 November 2020 12.00 London Time) - Getting started
This session will deal with expectations, hurdles and milestones of the first three months on a PhD. We focus on how to work with your supervisors, how to involve yourself within the academic life of your faculty or institution, and how to stay focused and motivated when setting out.
