ABSTRACT

Medical knowledge has been expanding at an exponential rate for several decades while, at the same time, technology has enhanced our ability to find factual information in seconds. Merging these changes with healthcare systems in which doctors are increasingly supervising teams of caregivers, we recognise that the physician must prioritise the ability to think critically about clinical information, to reason from basic principles to interpret data and plan optimum diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for each patient. In this session, we will explore the forces that led to the Pathways curriculum at Harvard Medical School, and review an innovative pedagogical approach to medical education for the new century.

BIOGRAPHY

A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Schwartzstein has studied the physiology of dyspnea for over 30 years, which included an active collaboration with Drs. Abe Guz, Lewis Adams, Shakeeb Moosavi and others at Charing Cross Hospital. For the past two decades he has also been a key educator at Harvard, serving as course director of Integrated Human Physiology and now Homeostasis 1 in the pre-clerkship curriculum.  Dr. Schwartzstein has been the Executive Director of the Shapiro Institute for Education and Research and Vice President for Education at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center since 2004, and Director of the HMS Academy since 2009.

Dr. Schwartzstein chaired the effort to create the Pathways curriculum, which was initiated in August 2015, and led the work developing pedagogical approaches to enhance analytical reasoning and techniques to maximise the benefits of small-group teaching in the Harvard medical education.
