Patient Behaviour Change Course in association with the Suffolk & North East Essex Training Hub

The health agenda is moving more and more towards prevention of ill health and maintenance of health. The Quality and Outcomes Framework (QoF) for GPs is just part of this trend. Clinicians in Primary and Secondary care, occupational health and private care all increasingly discuss behaviour change in their consultations.

So whether it is in the management of a chronic condition (e.g. diabetes, hypertension) or the targeting of specific behaviours (e.g. smoking, drinking alcohol, substance misuse and weight loss) consultations are increasingly likely to address patient behaviour.

However these sorts of conversations are frequently cited (by doctors, nurses and allied professionals) as being amongst the most frustrating that they have with their patients.

How can we target our time efficiently whilst enhancing our effectiveness with patients?

There is an increasing research base to show us which behaviours help. We also know that only skills based training has proof of effectiveness – incorporating practice, observation, feedback and further rehearsal.

Our seminar introduces some significant research evidence, particularly some of the skills of Motivational Interviewing. We allow the group to process this by facilitated discussion.

Group exercises help the participants to examine important messages, moving to rehearsal of specific skill areas that are most practical for front line clinical staff. Participants will leave the seminar with enhanced skills for these conversations with patients.

There is a balance of brief presentation, focused discussion, group work and skills focus – supported by a referenced workbook and moving briskly to retain learner engagement.

This training provides you with 6 CPD credits to help you meet the requirements for appraisals and revalidation.
