Description

An attention grabber, yes, but what does an aeroplane crash have to do with patient safety?

A growing number of healthcare providers are trying to learn from aviation accidents and, more specifically, from what the airlines have done to prevent them. In the last five years, several major hospitals have hired professional pilots to train their staff members on how to apply aviation safety principles to their work.

They learn standard cockpit procedures like communication protocols, checklists and crew briefings to improve patient care, if not save patients’ lives. Though healthcare experts disagree on how to incorporate aviation-based safety measures, few argue about the parallels between the two industries or the value of borrowing the best practices.

Come along to our exciting talk by three experienced airline pilots to learn more about how human factors and what airlines have learnt that can impact patient safety.

Captain Phil Mathews

Phil is a Captain with Flybe Airlines and is based in Manchester. He started his commercial flying career in 1998 with British Regional Airlines operating UK domestic and European routes. In 2005 he joined NetJets Europe flying to destinations across Europe and later long-haul destinations around the world. Phil joined Flybe in 2016 and is currently flying the Bombardier Dash 8 on the UK domestic and European routes and has almost 8,000 hours of flying experience.

Senior First Officer Paul Ayres

Paul is a Senior First officer with Virgin Atlantic Airlines and is based in Heathrow. In this time, he has amassed 12000 flying hours, circumnavigated the globe on a round the world trip and flown a variety of passenger aeroplanes. Currently, he flies the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the most technologically advanced passenger aeroplane in operation today.
