Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Pattern cutting masterclass: The dress block and sleeve

Are you a confident beginner, or maybe someone who has been sewing for years? Fed up using bought commercial patterns and want to learn how to create your own patterns and designs from scratch?

Our pattern cutting masterclass will start you on your pattern cutting journey - as the aim of the course is to give you a taste of how to cut your own patterns to specific measurements.

You will be taught in a gorgeous womanswear design studio in Belfast, with MaryRose, the studio owner and guest lecturer Lorraine Cunningham.

What will I learn on this course?

This day long course is focused on the dress block with the accompanying sleeve - and by the end of the course, you should be able to construct your own, based on your measurements.

No need to trawl through commercial pattern books to find what you want - design and cut your own designs like a fashion industry pro!

Using the dress block, you can produce a 'toile' in calico to check the fit - Lorraine and MaryRose will teach you all the secrets of the fashion industry - and how to create beautifully fitted garments. Using your dress block, you can generate lots of different styles of dresses, tops and blouses.

The course includes:

* 6 hours in depth tuition from two fashion industry professionals - MaryRose and Lorraine.

* All equipment needed will be supplied, no need to bring anything with you.

* Your blocks are yours to take away and use again and again.

* Technical handouts are included for each student to keep.

* Endless cups of tea and coffee, plus as much cake as you can eat throughout the busy day!

How much is the course?

The 6 hour course is £95.

Only 6 students in this class, (plus two lecturers) means loads of teacher/pupil attention - we keep classes small to ensure everyone has a great learning experience.

Who is the course suitable for?

The course is suitable for everyone from confident beginners (who can sew in straight lines, backtack and understands seam allowances) to experienced sewers who have been sewing for years.

How is the day planned?

Morning class 10-1pm

Lunch 1-2pm

Afternoon class 2-5pm

We start at 10am on Sunday morning, and work through till lunchtime at 1pm. Everyone will be ready for a lovely lunch and so we close the studio till 2pm, giving students an hour to relax and chat over lunch. Classes are not only educational and fun, they are a great way to make new friends!

The studio is only a few minutes from Belfast, so there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.

The afternoon session is from 2-5pm. We provide tea, coffee and lots of sweet treats throughout the day too, and take a small break in each class session - we don't stop for too long though, as there are so many things to learn!

Can I advance onto another course afterwards?

Of course!

We will be holding a variety of pattern cutting masterclasses over the term, so from this dress block starting point, you can then progress through all the other garment areas and keep learning at a professional level.

Any other important stuff I should know before booking?

Just a few things to bear in mind:

1. This course is suitable for confident beginners, up to advanced sewers. It is NOT suitable for total novices who have never used a sewing machine, or sewn before.

It is the pupils responsibility to ensure they are at the level required to attend class, please call us on 02895 215683 if you have any questions before booking.

2. We have so much to learn in each class - late arrivals disrupt teaching and we are so busy we can't recap for anyone who arrives 10 minutes late or more. We start at 10 sharp and take a lunchbreak at 1pm.

There is parking at Conway Mill, and it is easy to find - only a couple of minutes from Belfast city centre.

3. The class is for adults age 18+.

4. Cancellations: Not a problem, provided the studio is notified by calling and e mail a minimum of 14 days in advance.

Can I call the studio for more info if I have any questions?

Absolutely, give us a call on 02895 215683, we are happy to help!
