Event description

Description

Paul Levy ’72 has written a book titled, “Goal Play! Leadership Lessons from the Soccer Field” which is based on stories and analogies from over two decades of executive experience and coaching youth soccer. The book presents insights from sports, health care, business and government to help leaders get better outcomes.

Goal Play! has received critical acclaim from business leaders and management experts. Edgar Schein, professor emeritus from the Sloan School, calls it "one of the best leadership books I have ever read."

Paul Levy has long-standing connections with MIT, starting with his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Course XI and XIV. He was an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning form 1992 to 1998. He also served on the MIT Corporation from 2006 to 2011. He is a class officer for the Class of 1972 and in 2007 received the Harold E. Lobdell '17 Distinguished Service Award for “service to the Alumni Association and MIT that is of significant depth over a sustained period.” Before serving as CEO at BIDMC, Levy held several important leadership positions in Massachusetts and Arkansas.

In Boston, he was most widely known as the Executive Director of the MA Water Resources Authority, leading the clean-up of Boston Harbor. He has also been Chairman of the MA Department of Public Utilities, Director of the Arkansas Department of Energy, Executive Dean for Administration at Harvard Medical School. But it is his experience at saving BIDMC from financial turmoil and introducing unprecedented levels of transparency in the health care field that forms the basis for much of this book. That, combined with extensive background as a soccer coach, creates a unique and engaging presentation of leadership issues.
