Paul Ryan returns to the Alley Cat for a new residency on the last Sunday of every month (except December when the show is on the week before Christmas). He will be joined by the fabulous Kenny Clayton on piano. The duo have been widely praised for what Cary Gee of Tribune magazine described as their "effortlessly stylish interpretations of the Great American Songbook".
Paul and Kenny will draw on their vast repertoire featuring songs by Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer and many more to ensure that no two shows are the same. Paul augments the music with revealing (and often very funny) stories behind the songs and their composers.
in the coming months there will be special guests and regular features that focus on an individual composer or lyricist. The late Jack Mazzarik, jazz critic of the Evening Standard observed: "All these kiddy-crooners around today...aren't fit to shine (Ryan's) patent-leather shoes" while Matthew Wright of Jazzwise praised Paul for singing "with a knowledge and understanding of the nuances and wit of the great lyricists...each (song) a narrative...personal and poignant, opening up a thousand memories". Kenny Clayton is one of the country's finest pianist/composer/arrangers who has acted as musical director for a host of international stars including Matt Monro, Petula Clark, Dick Haymes and Charles Aznavour. Tribune magazine described him as "an authentic genius" while Jazzwise hailed his "particularly adept and sensitive" playing and his ability to infuse every show with a "wry humour".
In short, you are guaranteed an evening of music, laughter and even a few tears - a perfect way to spend a Sunday evening.
