This two day course is open to Head Teachers/ Deputy Head Teachers, Designated Safeguarding Leads and PSHE Co-ordinators in Corby Area Schools. (2 people from each school) The course will also accommodate PCSOs from your local area, to encourage community cohesion and sharing of good practice in the community.

This training is fully subsidised, so there is no charge to schools. Please bring your own lunch and drinks. It is a 2 day course for 2 senior people.

The course introduces the 5 elements of the PB process and provides opportunities to experience the 7 strategies in action. It will also be tailored to meet local authority strategic priorities:

SP4: Improve outcomes for children who are ‘looked after’
as well as
Improve outcomes for all children

Protective Behaviours (PBs) is more than a practical, down to earth, approach to personal safety.
When practised PBs:
Leads to self-empowerment
Builds resilience & self esteem
Helps people see people as people
avoids people seeing themselves or others as victims or any other label
Internal versus external locus of control
Works towards creating non-violent individuals, families and communities
Satisfies the need for fun and excitement without violence and fear
Different to the lock-your-doors, restrictive approach to safety
Personal, Dynamic, Empowering & Confidence-building
Links Safety with ‘Adventures’ & ‘Risking on Purpose’ while acknowledging Rights of others
The Language of Safety is the ‘glue’ that holds the whole process together
The learning outcomes for the course are that each participant will be able to:
Understand how Protective Behaviours (PBs) offers a practical and down to earth approach to personal safety for children, young people and adults
understand what makes up the Language of Safety and be able to use this in order to communicate in a way that enhances relationships and empowers all involved
Support children, young people and adults identify Unwritten Rules, explain their effects and choose effectively, which feel safe for them.
Recognise the interaction between Feelings, Thoughts and Behaviour and use this model to identify choices that can facilitate changes in behaviour for children, young people and adults
Embed the PB themes in practice – ‘We all have the right to feel safe all the time’ and ‘We can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small’
Clarify Rights and Responsibilities
Define a personal concept of Safety
Describe the function of Early Warning Signs in the PB process
Describe how a person might use the idea of Personal Networks of support
Utilise the 7 strategies to embed the above 2 themes in work with children, young people and adults and for themselves
Devise a Personal and/or Group Plan to use the Protective Behaviours process
Make links with the Protective Behaviours process and things that people may already statutorily have to do or choose to do
Develop skills, knowledge and confidence to use the PB process in practice
Day Two of this course will consist of a recap of the PB process and examine the ‘Taking Care Pack’ developed in Warwickshire and see how it can be used in your primary school. The pack provides lesson plans from Reception through to Year Six and a comprehensive approach to using PBs throughout your school. Secondary school staff will have the opportunity to plan how to use PBs in their own school.
We will also focus on:
The definition of Child Sexual Exploitation & spotting the signs
Using the Northamptonshire Tackling CSE Toolkit to help develop your policy, practice and resources for staff, pupils and parents
Consider how the use of PBs could affect school input on CSE and improve awareness of CSE in your school
The Blue Butterfly Project, which has already reached more than 1500 children in Northamptonshire schools and teaches children to recognise their ‘butterfly feelings’ when they don’t feel safe. They are encouraged to talk with an adult they trust, to help release the butterfly. The concept is relevant to both primary and secondary aged children, although delivered in primary schools.
On successful completion of this course, attendees will receive log-in details to access on-line resources to support the
application of PBs.
The Foundation course is the pre-cursor to attending a 4 day Specialist Practitioner course. Both Foundation and Specialist Practitioner courses form part of the Protective Behaviours Train the Trainer Pathway. Each school will be given Powerpoint Presentations to share with the school community to raise awareness of Protective Behaviours and how it can be used to address issues including CSE and Domestic Abuse.
