Event Details

The PDA Society's second conference will be held in Birmingham on 18th April 2018 at the Macdonald Burlington Hotel* on New Street. Registration is from 8.45am and the conference itself will run from 9.30am prompt to 4.45pm.

The theme of the day is 'OUR PDA JOURNEY' and the conference will consist of a mixture of speakers, workshops and informal opportunities to meet other parents. Please note that the conference will cover the complex issues surrounding PDA and not the basics of 'What is PDA?' and that the conference is for individuals with PDA, parents and carers (professionals welcome).

Ticket prices are £55 early bird (£40 concessions) if booked before 31 December 2017 and thereafter will be £60 (£45 concessions).

The keynote speakers will be:

  • Phil Christie, Consultant Child Psychologist: "PDA ... the story so far"

  • Ruth Fidler, Education Consultant: "Emotional wellbeing & education strategies"

  • Natalie Menagh & Lisa Atkin (parents): "Parenting Strategies"

  • Dr Judy Eaton, Consultant Clinical Psychologist: "Adults with PDA & mental health"

There will also be workshops to choose from (please choose from this list when you fill in your booking form, you'll be asked to indicate your preference which we'll do our best to accommodate, but numbers for some workshops are limited. Workshops will run concurrently and then be repeated so you will be able to attend a maximum of two workshops):

1. Education Law - Eleanor Wright, Solicitor, SENSOS

2. Social communication & interaction - Libby Hill, Speech & Language Therapist, SmallTalk

3. Sensory integration - Alison Hart, Occupational Therapist, Children's Choice Therapy Services

4. Q&A with adults with PDA

5. Impact on family members - Karen Whichello, Side by Side Coaching

6. Ask the PDA Society - Q&A with panel of PDA Society trustees

Throughout the day (including during the workshops should you not wish to attend one) there will also be ....

  • Chill & Chat for parents, carers and professionals in the Berlioz Lounge/Bar (with PDA Society facilitation from 2.15-4.30pm only)

  • Private room for adults with PDA - this room will be available as a quiet space to relax, have lunch in a calmer environment or meet fellow adults with PDA

A hot & cold buffet will be served at lunchtime with refreshments served from 8.45am and during all breaks. Please indicate any dietary requirements when prompted on the booking form.

FAQs

*What provision is there for delegates with restricted mobility?

The Macdonald Burlington is a 3 storey Edwardian hotel and access for delegates with restricted mobility necessitates assistance from hotel staff. Please contact us at comms@pdasociety.org.uk for more information.

Are there limits on the number of places available?

Yes. Booking will be on a first come, first served basis. We want to make the conference accessible to everyone who wants to come but we do have a finite limit so early booking is advised.

Are there ID requirements to enter the event?

Please bring along your booking confirmtation so that we can check you in more quickly. If you have booked a concessionary ticket then please bring along proof that you are receiving one of: Income Support, JSA or ESA.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

TOP TIP: travel by train! The hotel is directly opposite Birmingham New Street Station. Use the 'New Street/Victoria Square' exit and the hotel is immediately in front of you.

The hotel does not have a car park due to its central city location. We have discounted rates at two local car parks, both 5-6 minutes walk away. Tickets must be validated at hotel reception before departure.

NCP New Street (B5 4AN) £9.00 per 24 hours

Town Hall Car Park (B5 4AF) £10.40 per 24 hours

For further details please check the hotel website at http://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/our-hotels/macdonald-burlington-hotel/

Can I bring my children?

The conference is for individuals with PDA, parents, carers and professionals and will not be a suitable environment for babies or children of any age. We are not able to offer any child care arrangements. In addition, the conference content would not be suitable for children under the age of 16.

What are the times for the event?

Registration and refreshments will be available from 8.45am. The conference will start at 9.30am promptly and finish by 4.45pm.

Will there be any stalls at the event?

There will be some stalls from other relevant organisations in the refreshment area.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

You can transfer your ticket to someone else. Please make sure they have the original ticket and ask them to tell us your name when they book in. Only one person can be admitted for any one individual ticket.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes - it will help us speed your entry to the conference if you can bring your printed ticket.

What is the refund policy?

As a small charity we are trying to make this conference affordable within our limited resources. We are incurring significant expense in putting on this conference and so have to be prudent with our refund policy. We can offer full refunds for cancellations before 18th March 2018. After that date we won't be able to refund any money although tickets are transferable to others (see above).

Are there discounts if I buy more than one ticket?

We have kept the price as low as we can and so are afraid we aren't in a position to offer any bulk discounts.

I would be interested in volunteering for the PDA Society. How do I go about it?

We are a small charity, run entirely by volunteers and so would welcome any support you can provide. Please email us at comms@pdasociety.org.uk and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Are there reduced rates for staying at the Macdonald Burlington Hotel for delegates?

We have reserved a number of rooms for the night before the conference (17th April) at a slightly reduced rate which can be booked quoting the code PDAO170418 at the time of booking. Please call the hotel on 0121 643 9191 to reserve a room.
