The Opportunities for Passenger Growth

The trend in rail passenger journeys has with some fluctuations shown strong growth over two decades, but more recently growth has faltered. This pattern is inconsistent across markets; while some segments have recently declined, others have a more consistent picture of passenger growth.

This conference commences with a summary of what the trends in the different rail travel markets may or may not be telling us. The presenters then focus on how to turn what is being observed into opportunities for continued growth in passenger numbers.

A number of engaging speakers explain the reasons behind the observed changes in terms of markets, behaviour, society, technology and the economy and suggest the opportunities for growth that follow on from those findings.

The conference will be covering four main topics:

  1. Sociological and Economical Challenges

  2. Technological Innovations

  3. Critical Comparison of Forecasting Models

  4. The Opportunity for Growth

The keynote speaker, Alexander Jan, Chief Economist, Arup, will consider recent trends in a softening of demand for rail passenger services in the UK in an international context; whether these are likely to persist and what the implications are for future rail policy in Britain.

Other speakers are:

  • Péter Connell, LeighFisher - Jacobs - Trends in Rail Passenger Demand

  • Carol Smales and Lynne Miles, TfL & Arup - The Impact of Crossrail on London

  • Adriana MorenoPelayo, Arup - Understanding Drivers that Impact Travel Behaviours

  • Chris Lane, TfWM - How mobility as a service supports rail travel in the West Midlands

  • River Tamoor Baig, Hack Partners - Extracting value from open rail data feeds

  • Marcus Chick, Highways England Comparison of Road Forecasting

  • Steve Prichard, DfT Comparison of Aviation Forecasting

  • Tom Worsley, ITS Leeds - Comparison of Rail Forecasting

  • John Preston, University of Southampton - The National Rail System: How and why is it changing?

  • Greg Marsden, ITS Leeds - Rail in the future of travel demand

There will be opportunities for contributions from the audience through question and answer based discussions after every session; a lively debate is anticipated.

Who should attend?

The conference will benefit anyone with an interest on the impacts on demand and the opportunities to develop the rail market, including:

  • Passenger Demand Forecasting Scheme members.

  • TOC and Owning Group staff who rely on and/or produce demand forecasts at both the strategic and more detailed level.

  • Other Industry stakeholders involved in demand forecasting, the development of related knowledge and guidance, or who rely on the output of demand forecasts.

  • Consultants and Academics, including those working in rail demand forecasting, modelling, transport planning more broadly and those from other disciplines with potential cross interests.
