Description

International Alert is delighted to invite you to a Peace Talks panel discussion on:

Taking peacebuilding out of the shadows

In an increasingly uncertain world, where more than 1 in 5 people’s lives are affected by conflict, the Global Peace Index estimated that only around $10 billion was spent on peacebuilding in 2016.

This is about half a percent of the $1.72 trillion spent on the military in the same period and less than one percent of the $1.04 trillion of lost economic activity caused by war.

Yet, every $1 invested in peacebuilding reduces the costs of conflict by $16, and there is increasing evidence that peacebuilding works, provided it is sustained and done at an appropriate scale.

Following the release of our recent report, Redressing the balance, the panel will discuss its conclusion that more resources should be invested in peacebuilding, now more than ever, and what a larger role for peacebuilding as a policy option might look like.

Speakers:

  • Malcolm Chalmers, Deputy Director-General, Royal United Services Institute

  • Phil Vernon, Director of Programmes, International Alert

  • More to be announced.

Peace Talks is a series of panel events put on by International Alert that looks at current themes and developments around the world affecting peace, providing an interactive platform where people can discuss and challenge big questions about peace.

The discussion will be followed by a drinks reception. The event is free to attend, but donations are welcome (suggested donation £5).
