Event description

Description

This is a one-way trip from Ashton to Marple along the Peak Forest Canal, about 8 miles with no locks.

We will be stopping for 45 minutes at Hyde (The Cheshire Ring?), and again at either Woodley (The Navigation Hotel?) or Romily (Duke of York?), and no doubt some of you will have a quick one in Marple Bridge (The Norfolk?) before getting the train home - if invited, some of the crew may join you at this one.

Have a go at steering, chill out on-board, spot the wildlife, it's your choice. Unlimited tea, coffee & milk available. Bring snacks etc. to share.

Plenty of good free parking in Portland Basin or Marple next to Marple station in Marple Bridge. You will have to make your own way back from Marple:-

1. Bus 383 to Hyde, then 330 to Ashton.
2. Bus 384 or 383 to Stockport.
3. Train from Marple Station to Manchester.
4. Taxi.
5. Lift. One of the volunteers may have left his car in Marple, no harm in asking?

Finish about 6:30pm canal time (i.e. very approx) but if you want to jump ship earlier just let the skipper know.

Full cooking facilities available. Possibility of overnight stay for additional contribution if a few of you are interested (contact us for availability) bringing your own sleeping bag. Maximum capacity is 12 passengers on the trip or 8 overnight. Dogs welcome.

"Hazel" is a wonderful boat. Built 103 years ago to carry salt, she became a housebouat in 1951 and was recently lovingly restored by craftspeople of the Wooden Canal Boat Society (a registered charity) to provide uplifting holidays on the canals of England. Towed by the motorboat "Forget me Not", she will take you on a wonderful journey through a peaceful land. You will have a crew of WCBS volunteers to navigate the boats. Hazel was featured recently in John Sergent's "Barging Around Britain" TV program.

As well as having an enjoyable day yourselves you will be helping the charity financially enabling it to continue with it's main aims of helping the local community.
