Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Pecha Kucha Night is a chance to meet RCA alumni and current students who are all working on projects that have a sustainability mindset at their root, each taking a different way forward with new and innovative solutions to some of the worlds most pressing and emerging challenges, from the pollinator crisis and overfishing, to ethical consumption and restoring our relationship with nature.

Don't wait till the Graduation show or even the WIP show - this is your chance to get up close with some of the most exciting ideas that could shape our future, happening right now at RCA!

Sam Roots will share POM - a collaborative project initiated during his final year on Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) along with colleagues from Architecture, Fashion and another from IDE, which is now being developed as a startup with InnovationRCA.

Aran Dasan will share Safety Net - former IDE graduate and now a tutor on the same course is Chief Engineer on this project which could tidy up the messy business of over-catch in trawler fishing.

Davin Browner-Conaty will share Eavesdropping on Nature: DIY Bioacoustics - a project initiated by a group of Service Design students developing an open source, DIY sensor/service for biologists, using sound recordings to identify and track different species of leafhoppers in order to monitor crop health.

Becky Miller will share - Planet Impact Tax - a speculative policy project from Service Design exploring what the future of ethical consumption could look like through the lens of behavioural science, AI and macro-economics.

What is Pecha Kucha?
Pecha-kucha
is a quick visual presentation style first used by young designers in Japan to share their work publicly and meet fellow creatives. We will borrow their format followed by some structured chit-chat sessions so that you get a chance to discuss and feedback with each of the speakers in smaller groups. No hand-raising fear here!

The idea is that compared to a formal presentation and Q&A it encourages more relaxed discussion and feedback, as well as potentially spawning new ideas.

The format for the evening is gratefully inspired by the progressive work of Department22.

The bargain ticket price* includes your first half-pint of the night!
Sign-up for the evening is limited to 24 people and places are offered on a first-come-first serve basis.

*All speakers are kindly giving their time and sharing their projects for free, no one makes any profit from this event; the small ticket price is just to try and prevent dropout on the night, plus you get a drink so everyone's happy :)
