Description

Presented by: Hellen Parra Florez

Student self-confidence affects students’ level of engagement, experience and progression. Academics’ teaching quality is assessed against these factors, so it is important to learn how to help students to build their self-confidence.

This session will provide tips and techniques for promoting student confidence based on Carol Dweck’s ground-breaking growth mindset theory. Topics will include:

  • An introduction to Carol Dweck’s growth mindset theory.

  • Growth mindset v fixed mindset.

  • Practical ways of boosting a growth mindset in students.

    • Praise and feedback.

    • Teaching methods that recognise different learning abilities.

    • Explain the merits of challenges.

    • Use the word “yet”.

The Academy for Education and Professional Development’s mission is “To ensure consistent high-quality development and delivery of educational programmes with student experience at their heart”. Academy events are open to all those who contribute to the development, delivery and management of FBMH undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes including staff from across the University, the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre and our NHS clinical education partners. The Pedagogy Seminar Series provides a forum to discuss research undertaken and/or pedagogy literature of interest.

Refreshments will be provided.
