Evenings of literature, conversation, dinner and wine.
Featuring in our Winter Salon, 7th of December:
Ruth Padel, British poet and writer. Ruth has published eight poetry collections, a novel, and eight books of non-fiction, including three on reading poetry. Her theme is nature and its connections with science, music and conservation. Her most recent book The Mara Crossing presents a sweeping, unconventional, experimental volume of mixed poetry and prose about migration. Migrants, cellular, animal or human, migrate to survive: but human migrations are inextricably mixed with trade, invasion, conquest and empire."Home is where you start from, but where is a swallow's real home? And what does "native" mean if the English Oak is an immigrant from Spain?"
'Her poems and essays are a lyrical tribute to the instincts and whims, trials and beauties that catalyse movement.' Economist
The evening starts with drinks. The reading commences at 8.15pm, followed by dinner and wine. Whisky and coffee will be served at 11pm.
"The salons have fast become literary London’s most enjoyable Europhile event." The Economist
"A combination of fringe theatre, psychiatrist's couch, conversazione society and flirtation parlour, the Peirene salon is unlike any other literary gathering. It was intellectually stimulating but full of laughter, argumentative but friendly, seriously focussed on the Novel but without forgetting the Wine. And Meike Ziervogel -- gracious, beautiful and just slightly wicked -- is the best salonniere since Madame Geoffrin in 18th century Paris." John Walsh, The Independent
