Description

Workshop Details

Andrew will demonstrate the process he uses to produces wonderful and colourful structure with use of pen and ink. This workshop will concentrate on various techniques to achieve realistic texture on buildings and various other elements to create a watercolour painting to be proud of.

Throughout the day there will be plenty of time to ask questions and Andrew will give his expert advise on a one to one basis.

Absolute beginners would be very welcome at this workshop, and experienced painters may find it helpful if they haven't done pen & ink before. There is a watercolour element which provides the 'finishing touch' at the end.

About the Artist

Andrew is a self-taught artist, originally from Honley near Holmfirth, and now living in North Wales.

In 2012 he was shortlisted for ‘Artist of the Year’ by Artist & Illustrators magazine. He is an invited artist at Holmfirth Artweek and has exhibited work at the Royal Cambrian Academy Open (Wales) and Grosvenor Open (Chester) exhibitions.

Andrew teaches regular watercolour classes in North Wales, and has demonstrated watercolour painting to art societies throughout the UK. He was Head Tutor at North Light Gallery Art School in Huddersfield until his move to Wales in 2010.

Andrew is a member of the Huddersfield Art Society.

Materials Provided

Calder Art will provide the following materials for the workshop:

1 x Table Top Easel

1 x MDF Board in various sizes

1 x Paint Pot

1 x Palette or Plate

Masking Tape and other sundry products are also available.

Materials to Bring

1. If this is your first time using pen & ink, drawing pens (sometimes described as 'technical pens') are suggested - these must be permanent, ie. light-fast and waterproof. A range of nib sizes are available, from 0.1 (smallest) to 0.8 (largest). Andrew works with 0.5mm.

Alternatively you may wish to use the old-fashioned nibbed dipping-pens & Indian ink (black or sepia). This is a more difficult technique, but gives better results. The best nibs for this are described as 'sketching' or 'drawing' nibs - calligraphy nibs can also be used, as long as they are not too wide.

2. Pencils (HB, 2B), sharpener & putty rubber

3. Watercolour brushes and paints

4. Watercolour paper – I recommend Bockingford 200lb/425gsm ‘NOT’ (which means not hot-pressed HP), although feel free to experiment with different textures (‘NOT’, Rough or HP) and different weights of paper (generally the heavier the better).

5. Photograph(s) of buildings to work from

All materials are available to purchase from Calder Graphics if needed.
